Illiteracy is a dark plague upon the land here in Honduras and much higher in the remote mountainous regions. It is a robbery upon the people that continues generation after generation! As you go into these areas, it's like you can see the chains upon the people holding them back from the best that God has for their lives. In my initial plan for the people once I arrived here for full-time missions was to start a reading program. How can we effectively teach them the Word of God if they can't read? Thus, they would never be able to build a biblical foundation, never grabbing a hold of God's truth for their lives. Here are some recent statistics that I found about the area that we live in:
It's very troubling once you start to ponder the conditions these people live in and have to deal with on a daily basis. How could they possibly have any real hope in their lives? The only hope I know of is | Jesus Christ, but as stated earlier, how can they build a foundation unless they can read. To me, it goes hand in hand, reading and serving our Lord Jesus Christ. "How can I help", you may be asking. There are several ways you can do so. We are looking for people to advise and direct us through this process. I know many of our followers are educators that have a passion for people to learn. Also, financial resources, I am estimating that we can reach a community for as little as $125 per month with $200 being the initial start up cost. My vision is to start with one community. As we see success and financial resources grow, we will expand to other communities. Please feel free to contact me directly at: shawn@morningstarmissions.org I would love to hear from anyone to help us through this process. This one thing I know, we will break the back of Illiteracy! God bless you all and thank you for your time! Shawn Paul |
